Reborn Materia: FFVII

-Breaths heavily-

I can’t even even keep it together as I am writing this post!  It’s finally here:
Final Fantasy VII – The Remake

Sony is sure to keep PlayStation 4 on the map with this.  A remake for FFVII has been talked about for LONG YEARS now within gamers from all over advocating for such a masterpiece of a story to be retold through the power of new technologies.  I sustain the latter as a fact as the combined video count for the trailer surpasses 10 million views – more than various of the games trailers shown for E3 like Uncharted 4 and Halo 5.

It has come to my attention (sadly) that the new FFVII’s storyline will have drastic changes in comparison to the previous FFVII for the PlayStation. It rubs me the wrong way those kind of rumors are floating around (and I’ll be damn hurt to the deepest part of my core), but let’s be honest here: I am pretty certain that being able to play with such a beloved cast outweighs the fact of the story not being the exact same as it’s predecessor.  However, Tetsuya Nomura (Japanese video game artist, designer, and director for Square Enix), stated there are certain plots in the game will be left untouched.  Leaving us to think changes are to be expected.  Another one of the rumored changes was that the character list may be altered by adding and/or subtracting characters.  However, Nomura has confirmed the roster will be intact and moving on forward headstrong – YAAAAY!  Not saying I approve of changes, I am just saying it would be refreshing to not see them like this anymore:

With no release date yet, we can only sit and try to manage our anxiety and depressive symptoms while we wait for this wonderful for such treasure to materialize.  A release date of 2017 has been rumored.  Though it might be longer since Nomura is also working on Kingdom Hearts 3 which also does not have a release date – a handful for sure.

Are you ready?

What are your thoughts on this remake?  Are you excited as I am?  Let me know on the comments.  Also, remember to Like and Share.  See you around!

RIP Norman Reedus on Silent Hill

RIP Norman Reedus on Silent Hill

You remember when many of us were squealing like lunatic fans for the new Silent Hill game starting Norman Reedus? Well, it’s time break out the handkerchief as the game has been officially cancelled. Yes, you read right. Out of ALL the online April Fool’s jokes, this one had to be actually true. Not amused…

As a fan of survival horror in general, this completely blows – and not in the good way. I remember hours stuck to the television screen with one of my best friends who was a hardcore fan of the franchise. The creepy ambiance. The crazy puzzles. The intricate story. Ugh! Loved it. Even when the movie came out and I haven’t heard about Silent Hill in a long while, a spark ignited in me as I remember the masterpiece Silent Hill was and continues to be. So you can imagine the excitement I got when I read about a Silent Hill game coming for this time’s new gen consoles.

But now it’s all a lie… THE CAKE IS A LIE!

The cancellation I’m pretty certain came as a ripple effect of Kojima leaving Konami after Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is complete. Him leaving meant the Konami-Norman-Del Toro relationship to be non-existent. At least for now…Maybe someone will pick it up? …I AM ALLOWED TO HOPE!

Earlier when the teaser was out, Kojima had stated the new Silent Hills would make us so scared that it would “make you sh*t [our] pants.” How right he was. I am pretty sure many did when reading the game was not ever going to be completed. To make things even more “interesting,” the playable teaser on the PS4 was removed yesterday. If you didn’t play it, tough luck. People who have it don’t want to give it away. There are people who are willing to sell it – for a decent price of course. You might be able to take refuge on YouTube sanctuary and at least look at the beautiful thing that will never be.

Epic.

That is the word Sony chooses to describe PlayStaion 4’s future.  Gamers all over the world have been teased by Sony in these past few months with statements such as “epic stuff” which “can’t wait for E3” would be announced in due time.  One of the most shocking reveals were the several tweets by Chicago born (woot!) actor, Todd Stashwick, who shamelessly posted a selfie where he’s wearing a sensor suit and picture of dummies on the floor accompanied by the hashtags #uncharted #ps4.  SONY YOU’RE KILLING US HERE!

Uncharted is one of the most recognized franchises by PlayStation, so certainly many where hyperventilating the millisecond their eyes devoured these:

stashwick3

If that didn’t catch your attention, watch the released trailer below.  The overwhelming emotions that will want to burst from your chest will take your breath away.

As I wrote about it in my previous trilogy posts titled Let the console war begin!, PlayStation 4 slaughtered the competition and stayed on top since the beginning.  Xbox One does snag the title of “Fasting Selling Console” and the Wii U experienced a surprising boast with the releases of Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zeld: A Link Between World.  Nonetheless, with over one million units sold in North America in the first 24 hours, PlayStation 4 holds the title of Top Selling Console and is clearly a beast not to be overlooked.

What are your thoughts on the PS4?  Do you think PlayStation 4 will be overthrown at any time before the next Console War begins?  Let me know!

See you around!

Killzone Shadow Fall – A Review by Lou-Cyo

Hello and welcome to my review of…

Warning!

Warning!

Spoiler alert!

Before you read on ahead, let me warn you there WILL be spoilers of the game in my review – read AT YOUR OWN RISK!  With that out of the way, let’s start!

Overview: There’s a war beginning to uproar between two (very human-like if I may add) species, the Vektans and the Helghast, who live on the same planet.  It’s around the 2300’s and you, Vektan native Lucas Kellan, joined the Shadow Marshall Academy and became a Shadow Marshall working for the Vektan Security Agency (VSA) headquarters.  While following orders and infiltrating the Helghast to take hold of enemy’s military intel, Lucas finds himself in a compromising position when discovering not only the monstrous plan of the Helghast leaders, but also the true intentions of the VSA.

Gameplay: Killzone Shadow Fall is a fist person shooter.  Apart from virtually standard controls (e.g., pressing one button to reload, another to aim your weapon, and the other to change your weapon), this game uses the newly installed touch screen pad on the controller. While playing as Lucas (and yes, you get to play as another character at the end of the game), you have control over a flying droid called OWL.  Apart from being able to revive Lucas if he has an adrenaline pack handy, the OWL has multiple options that are activated by swiping on the touch screen pad which include: hacking, stunning, firing, zip-lining, and shielding.  Also in KSF there’s a one hit kill by pressing R3 in which Lucas uses a knife to slash his enemies’ necks open, if not opting for breaking their necks with his bare hands.  Both lethal.  Both graphic.  Both awesome.  Multiplayer mode is available presenting three classes – Scout, Assault, and Support – each with unique weapons and abilities. Also on multiplayer, you get to pick from between developed maps (i.e., Warzones) by game creators or players. An online season pass for $20.00 is available for purchase containing expansion packs. Furthermore, many of the weapons have dual functions with the second function having more fire power – yes, the more powerful the weapon, the slower it’s going to be.  But if you time your shots right, it will always be worth it.  Another beautiful aspect of KSF’s gameplay involves several free falling scenes where you have to use the joysticks to maneuver through the the laws of aerodynamics. Overall, the controls run smoothly and are easy to remember.

Lou-Cyo’s Reaction: Killzone Shadow Fall gets a solid 8.5.  Apart from the obvious stunning and smooth graphics, the background story is intriguing and thought-provoking.  Following a massive detonation, the planet Helghan was destroyed to the point of being inhabitable.  Helgahst survivors where granted protection by the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA) – an alliance group who protects the colonies of the United Colonial Nations which includes all colonies under the government of planet Earth.  ISA decides it’s a wondrous idea to give Helghast refugees half of planet Vekta.  As a consequence, half of Vektans are being evicted out of there homes – if not executed in the process.

Can you imagine evicting half a planet?  As if that’s not fucked up enough, Lucas’s father gets killed in the process.  Great.  But it is during these times of evacuations and family loss where Lucas commences to develop as a character.  Also, the way the game’s story takes you from being a loyal Vektan to a total outcast was flawless.  Lucas, who risks his life in every single operation, is being placed on the front lines just to find out all his efforts are not to prevent the use of a deadly bioweapon, but to facilitate a genocide in a war he believes to be preventing.  The emotions displayed by Lucas throughout the game connect with the player to exhilarating levels since you are basically being hunted by two opposing organizations – one of them being the VSA.  The feeling of being unsafe lingering throughout…  Brilliant.

I appreciated the effectiveness of the OWL.  When you actually send the flying bot to shoot down some motherfuckers, the OWL actually gets the job done.  It’s not one of those scenarios where you get “assistance” from in-game characters that either run the wrong way or shoot everything else but actual target.  I can’t count the times OWL had saved my life serving as a bullet shield and an efficacious turret – I think I fell in love with the little fellow!

OWL

The coup de gras which definitely places Killzone Shadow Fall as one of the best games out there for the PS4 is the game’s ending.  During the last mission, Lucas finds the leader of the Helghast and the bioweapon.  However, the game’s story takes a sharp left turn as Thomas Sinclair, who took care of Lucas after Lucas’s father was murdered, ends up shooting Lucas in the head when seconds before Lucas was on the ground pleading for his life and the credits follow.

Thomas Sinclair

Not only sad, but IRRITATING as fuck!  I couldn’t believe it!  My jaw was probably on the floor until a cutscene interrupts the credits letting you know the game is not over and you have one more shot at revenge.  In the last scene, you play as Echo in a mission to assassinate Sinclair and put an end to the war.  Echo scampers through the city of Vekta; gets her hands on a sniper rifle; and after positioning herself in a hidden area she whispers, “For Kellan,” and shoots – the camera following the bullet that will pierce Sinclair’s skull. The amount of emotional distress this game’s ending made me feel was unimaginable.

Echo

I deducted some points because the game is indeed short.  There’s only 10 Chapters in which more than half are not lengthy.  Once you have finished the game, you’ll be able to breeze through the missions if you decide to play a second time around.  You can always challenge yourself by trying to get all the collectibles and trophies which indeed will take more time, but the game itself won’t be consuming much of your time.  I also took some points off because the presence of Sinclair during the last chapter where he kills Lucas seemed rushed and, to some level, random.  Also, when Echo snipes at Sinclair, you don’t get to see the effects of the shot.  You are left to assume Sinclair died.  I don’t understand why we don’t get the opportunity to see Sinclair’s brain matter on the floor after witnessing Lucas slitting throats all throughout.

There you have it!  Hope you enjoyed my review and please, do yourself a favor and get a copy of Killzone Shadow Fall – I recommend it.  If you played the game, do you agree with my review?  If you haven’t played it, what vibe do you get from the game after reading?  Let me know what you think!  See you around!

Basically, in Ganondorf’s words, “What they can possibly hope to achieve?”

“I’m allowed to say, ‘meh.'”

That’s the attitude Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo of America, has towards the PlayStation 4 and XBOX One systems’ game lineups.  He appears to feel there’s no threat en route to the Wii U because when in a console war “it’s all about the games.”  Reggie embellishes the latter statement claiming Nintendo’s ownership over unique and legendary franchises like Zelda, Mario, and Donkey Kong – and he is right…  To an extent.

I agree the titles mentioned above are indeed beyond greatness; however, I believe there’s a line between maintaining a positive attitude and beginning to sound bastardly cocky – which I feel the latter is what’s happening to Mr. President over there.  I understand being passionate about a console – as I am a Nintendo fan myself.  However, it’s not a real necessity to diminish others’ work, especially with no facts supporting such devaluing indications.  Don’t get me wrong, if something’s a piece of crap, I can acknowledge it and call it what it is: crap.  Nonetheless, as I wrote in my entries Part III – PlayStation 4: “The most powerful console” and Let the console war begin! Part III, NEITHER of Wii U’s rivals are opening with only “meh” category games.  N-E-I-T-H-E-R.

Reggie’s allowed to say “meh,” but that doesn’t take away the fact of it being a distasteful comment directed to the work of numerous individuals and marvelous gaming franchises.  It all makes it seem like if it’s not Nintendo, it sucks.  And that’s far away from the truth.

So what do you think about Reggie Fils-Aime’s expressions?  You already know mine, but I’m interested in yours.

See you around!

Let the console war begin! Part II

Welcome back to LouCyo’s reviews!  In my last entry I summarized the how the PlayStation 4 clobbered the Xbox One.  No matter how you look at it, the PS4 won battle and there’s no question about it.  I believe Xbox is at the bottom of the food chain and will need an act (or several) of whatever devine entities out there to survive once all available consoles and games become available for purchase.  With that said, I can’t forget to review Nintendo’s E3 live stream – which HOLY FUCK it was SOO GOOD!

First up, Pokemon X and Pokemon Y – Cannot. Fucking. WAIT!  AHHH!  Admitting to a hiatus of playing pokémon, I’ve always been a Pokemon fan.  Heck.  Not to long ago I dressed up as Pikachu to an themed event (which I might add I looked adorable).  Nintendo’s presentation of Pokémon X/Y showed exceptionally enhanced graphics in comparison to the ones we are accustomed to on handheld devices.   Pokémon battles have been blessed with more animation and smoother illustration.  Nintento also uncovered the enigma revolving around Sylveon’s Type.  You ready for this?  Sylveon is a Fairy Type pokémon!  Yes.  You read right.  It’s time to brush up on your pokémon knowledge and battle strategies.  It was also revealed that Fairy is Super Effective against Dragon.  Though I am not too ecstatic about it, I’m relieved Sylveon is not any of the types I mentioned on one of my posts earlier this year titled Who’s that Pokémon?! It’s… … Sylveon…? – especially flying.  I would’ve punch a couple of concrete walls…  Nonetheless, an addition that was much anticipated by many since a new Type hasn’t been introduce to the world of pokémon for quite some time now.  New pokémon, new storyline, new world…  I cant wait to throw them pokéballs!

Can we take a second to discuss Super Mario 3D World?!  The best way to describe the level of elation I felt when Super Mario 3DW was announced is to compare it to 10 serious heart attacks combined because of the legendary essence the game embodies.  Super Mario 3DW took me back to my SNES games when I played the CLASSIC Mario Bros. 2 (which if you’ve never played it, find any means necessary to do so…   Even if it means your giving away your unborn child)!  In Super Mario 3DW you’re be able to select 4 iconic characters.  Apart from the obvious choice of Mario, you get to play as Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad.  Once you do, you’ll run through a 3D landscape stomping on enemies, climbing walls, and collecting coins. Moreover, Super Mario 3DW will offer is a Counter Operative mode which gives the game a nice twist.  Nonetheless, encompassing much of all the Mario-esque fun we love.  Super Mario 3DW will introduce “new power suits” to the Mario Bros. universe and one of these was the Cat Suit – this new suit will let the characters pounce on enemies; scratch foes in the face; and climb up walls.  I can only imagine what other wacky outfits Nintendo has in store.

Let’s move on to some good ol’ Mario Kart!  Wii U will let you enjoy the madness of Mario Kart 8.  The word madness doesn’t even encircle the wonderful chaos of this game.  You’re hovering over walls; gliding through the air; driving through water tunnels…  For goodness’ sake the absence of gravity is implemented in the game – insane!  And I love every single second of it.  The courses look beautiful and I can’t wait to see the character selection and Power Ups.

Yes.  The above picture is exactly what you’re imagining.  Nintendo officially announced that a new Super Smash Bros will be available on 2014 featuring 3 new brawlers: Villager (Animal Crossing), Mega Man, and Wii Fit Trainer girl!  Not much was revealed but we can all anticipated the epicness of this game.  I can’t wait to see the whole brawling crew, the new challenger modes, special power moves…  I’ll stop because I’m hyperventilating…

Above were the games that I believe will be the future highlights of the Wii U in the next upcoming months.  Nintendo presented several other games during their presentation, but I wasn’t really quite enticed.  For example, Wii Party U.  It’s basically Mario Party but with Miis.  You’re on a board; roll dice; move around the board; and play mini games after.  I prefer Mario Parties – they just look more fun and aesthetically pleasing.  Then the Wii Fit…  I go to the gym.  So yeah…  Moving on.  Nintendo did brought up third party games available for the Wii U.  However,  the majority of the games looked like games you can download to mobile devices.  If not, the games are already going to be available on other consoles – no sense of excitement or exclusivity.

Nonetheless, Nintendo always does a great job in keeping a strong fan base even when finding itself not being the most popular or having the highest selling numbers during this console war.  I was wondering why this is and decided to discuss it with one of my best friends in the whole wide world who is a gamer himself.  I believe my friend explained it beautifully. Here’s a snippet of our conversation:

Me: “Would you agree that Nintendo’s ability to stay relevant even when other consoles top the charts is because they overall present more likable characters than other systems?  I’m trying to decipher how Nintendo always seems to stay afloat in the midst of console wars. Like the fucking neutral party in world wars.”

Best friend: “I think it’s due to the fan loyalty it builds. It might not be the best at attracting new fans, but those who try it tend to at least buy their consoles due to the unique experiences they offer.  With other consoles you feel like a consumer. You are objectively deciding whether to buy their consoles based on the merits of their machines and their exclusives. But with [N]intendo it’s more like you’re choosing to join in the goofy fun of an oddball company.”

Where there you have it!  Are you excited for the Wii U now?  I know I am!  Let me know what you think. See you around!

Let the console war begin! Part I

It’s here!

Yesterday was E3’s live streaming covering the PS4.  And, boy, what a show!  Sony’s presentation demonstrated why the PlayStation 4 has been proclaimed as “the most powerful console” out there.  Long story short, the PS4 ANNIHILATED Xbox One.  No questions about it.  I was going to review on the Xbox One before this post, but I’ll do it at a later time.  After yesterday’s demonstrations which included PS4 hardware, game play options, and price there is no way I wasn’t going to pay tribute to the PS4’s complete PWNAGE over Xbox One.  So with that, I summarized yesterday’s events into Three Amazing Facts explaining the how beautifully Sony’s PlayStation 4 murdered Microsoft’s Xbox One…  Let’s begin!

“The PlayStation 4 won’t impose any new restrictions on used games.” – Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America

Amazing fact #1: No Game Restrictions

Sony staff made it specifically clear that the PS4 will support used games with no difficulty.  That right there was a fatal blow to Microsoft.  Microsoft announced that once an Xbox One game was purchased, the physical copy of the disk served as a license to play the game. The Xbox One will register the game and no other console would be able to use that disk…  Unless they pay for it.  So basically, a “bye-bye” to sharing games with friends and family.  The old days were you could ask  someone for a game just to try it out are over in the Xbox universe.  What kinda fucked up shit is that?!  Thankfully, Sony made an instructional video to help Microsoft understand the “strenuous” process of sharing games.  Oh!  And let’s not forget about the Xbox One NEEDING to be connected to the internet at least once every 24 hours in order to allow gaming – horse shit.  I don’t know about you, but one of the last things I want to worry about is making sure my console is connected to the internet or I’ll be fucked and not be able to play.  No, thank you.  PS4 FTW.  Done.

PS4 listened to the fans and it will show on sales no doubt.  The news of no game restrictions was received with blissful faces and a booming applause from the audience.  On one of my previous entries, I mentioned how one of the PS4’s main cornerstones was to embrace and enhance connectivity between people – and with this decision the company has stayed true to its vision.  Much respect.

Amazing fact #2: Price

I’ll make it sweet and simple: $399.00.  That’s it.  Yes, taxes and all other add-ons will increase the price you will end up paying at the cash register.  However, you’ll get to own the most powerful console known to man by paying less than if you were to buy a 1st gen predecessor.  Fundamentally, you get a console with top notch technology, capacity to play used games, and it’s around $100.00 than it’s “competition…”  Do I need to elaborate more?  Yes!  I can and I will!

Image

Amazing Fact #3: Game Lineup

Since the PS4 started making it’s product known, Sony has used every second to impress its fans and newcomers alike with its uniqueness.  Microsoft, however, failed to do that.  During the Xbox One presentation, several of its “soon to be hits” games have PlayStation roots.  In what world did Microsoft thought that presenting a solid amount of games which have PlayStation-esque characteristics was such a phenomenal idea?  I have no idea what Microsoft is trying to achieve – it’s a freaking enigma.  On the other hand, Sony comes in strong with titles like Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, and Destiny.  All with a great fanbase.  All exclusive to the system.  Well fucking played, Sony.

Conclusion: Xbox One has died

With these 3 facts alone, the PlayStation 4 has proved that is will not disappoint – and it’s still not available in stores.  Sony has done an exceptional job not only delivering to gamers what they want, but also learning from the potentially fatal mistakes its competitors have made.  I’m not a PlayStation hardcore fan, but I can recognize an outstanding machine when I see one.  Let us welcome “the most powerful console!”

What are your thoughts on this console war?  Let me know!  See you around!
